The Jew and Gentile Podcast

A commercial flight bound for Tel Aviv suddenly plunged thousands of feet after a violent incident in the cockpit—and what happened next sounds almost too incredible to be real.

In this special episode of The Jew and Gentile Podcast, Chris Katulka is joined by Steve Herzig to discuss the dramatic events aboard the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, including the injured captain, the Israeli passenger who helped stabilize the aircraft, and the off-duty pilots who ultimately helped bring the plane safely to the ground.

Chris and Steve also examine how major news outlets initially described the incident, why questions remain about the co-pilot’s motive, and the growing debate surrounding how the story is being reported and discussed online.

There’s even a moment that sounds strangely familiar to a classic Seinfeld scene—but behind the humor is a remarkable story of courage, providence, and 180 lives spared.

The investigation is still developing, and important questions remain about exactly what happened and why.

🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast — Episode Notes

This week on The Jew and Gentile Podcast, Chris and Steve begin with the unusual story of twins born with dramatically different skin tones—one black and one white—which leads into a fascinating biblical connection: the nation of Israel traces its story back to twins, Jacob and Esau. The guys also share some updates from recent travels to Williams Bay, Wisconsin, and Northwest Bible Chapel in Chicago, including more Stick With Israel sticker giveaways and a funny follow-up about longtime listener George, whose daughter discovered even more candy wrappers in his shower drain. They also preview upcoming FOI Equip classes, including Dr. Peter Goeman’s September series, Is the Church the New Israel?, and Dr. Kobby Barda’s October presentation, An Israeli’s View on Christian Zionism.

Chris and Steve then turn to Jesus’ penetrating question in Matthew 16:26: “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” They explore the timeless idea of trading what is eternal for temporary success, drawing connections to works such as The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Screwtape Letters, and The Pilgrim’s Progress. The conversation also touches on Jesus’ patience with people, Milton Friedman’s famous exchange with Phil Donahue, the strategic value of America’s alliance with Israel, concerns over Israel’s growing “brain drain,” and new developments in Israeli politics. And in keeping with the theme of Jesus’ question about gaining the whole world, the guys close with a Yiddish word connected to “world.”

🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast — Episode Notes

In this episode of The Jew and Gentile Podcast, Steve joins the conversation from beautiful Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, while Chris hosts from New Jersey. Together, they discuss several significant developments involving Israel and the Middle East, including the U.S. Army’s new “Hammer of the Gods” system designed to disrupt missile attacks, recent Israeli political polling showing Likud in second place, and the ongoing disagreement over plans for an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas. They also preview Dr. Peter Goeman’s upcoming FOI Equip class, Is the Church the New Israel?, scheduled for September 3, 10, and 17.

Chris and Steve also reflect on the immeasurable love and greatness of God through the hymn The Love of God and its connection to the ancient Jewish poem Akdamut. Written in Aramaic by Rabbi Meir Ben Isaac Nehorai, the poem declares that even if the oceans were filled with ink and the heavens became a scroll, God’s greatness could never be fully described. The episode also considers several powerful questions Jesus asked throughout the Gospels and concludes with a classic Yiddish Ellis Island story explaining how the phrase “shoyn fargesn”—“I’ve already forgotten”—became the name “Sean Ferguson.”

🕎 Yiddish Word of the Day

• Shoyn Fargesn— I forget

An elderly Yiddish-speaking man arrives at Ellis Island after a long and exhausting journey. Along the way, he has passed through so many processing centers—and been given so many different versions of his name—that by the time an immigration officer asks, “What is your name?” his mind goes completely blank.

Flustered, he mutters in Yiddish, “Shoyn fargesn,” meaning, “I’ve already forgotten.”

The officer nods, writes it down, and from that day forward, the man is known as Sean Ferguson.
